Portaferry is a beautiful small town in County Down, Northern Ireland, at the southern tip of the Ards Peninsula, near the Narrows at the entrance to Strangford Lough. The Portaferry area is popular with local and foreign tourists because of its outstanding beauty, history, wildlife and other visitor attractions.
The Portaferry Aquarium, Exploris (Northern Ireland's public Aquarium and seal sanctuary) is a famous and popular visitor attraction to Portaferry. Discovery pool demonstrations, run by experienced guides, at regular intervals throughout each day give you the opportunity to interact with a variety of living marine animals.
There is a ferry service across Strangford Lough between the villages of Strangford and Portaferry in County Down. To travel the distance between Strangford and Portaferry by road is approximately 75 kilometres and takes about an hour and a half by car. By contrast, the ferry route is approximately 0.6 nautical miles with a typical crossing time of about 8 minutes.
SeaGen is the world's first large scale commercial tidal stream generator. It is four times more powerful than any other tidal stream generator in the world. The first SeaGen generator was installed in Strangford Narrows between Strangford and Portaferry in April 2008 and was connected to the electricity grid in July 2008.It generates 1.2 Mega Watts for between 18 and 20 hours a day while the tides are forced in and out of Strangford Lough through the Narrows. Strangford Lough was also the site of the very first known tide mill in the world, the Nendrum Monastery mill where remains dating from 787 have been excavated.
